Die Arbeiten William Egglestons spiegeln eine verlassene, degenerierte, sich selbst überlassene Welt wider: Dinge und Menschen erscheinen abgetrennt vom ihrem sozialen Zusammenhang, entbunden von ihren Funktionen im Alltag. Seine Bedeutung als Klassiker der Fotografie besteht in der besonderen Behandlung der Farbe als gestalterische Bedeutungsebene der Fotografie. Eggleston schuf eine Ästhetik der Fremdartigkeit, wobei der Farbe stets ein psychologisierendes Moment innewohnt, gewachsen aus dem Versuch, die Wahrnehmung zu sezieren: „Ich habe mich oft gefragt, was andere Lebewesen sehen – ob sie sehen wie wir. Ich habe versucht, eine Menge verschiedener Fotos zu machen, die aussehen, als ob sie nicht von Menschen gemacht wären.“
